Q&A: Bed and Breakfast, Business environment

By Blog Answers at 08/28/09 11:03

On 08/03/09 20:49, Jon Bell asked the following question:

Is it difficult to run/manage a small bed and breakfast or a small hotel in Montevideo? Is there a lot of red tape for foreigners who want to do this? We speak fluent Spanish (have lived and worked in Spain and Mexico) and have experience with rental property in the US.

Hi Jon,

I worked in a hostel along the coast of Uruguay and I got the impression that Montevideo is now over-run with hostels and simple accommodation.

It is still a small city (the 1 - 1.5 million quoted includes ALL the sprawling suburbs and ajoining towns) and I find most tourism tends to pass through the city quite quickly to head toward to Punta del Este and other coastal areas.

My friend who owns and runs a hostel seems to encounter quite a number of cumbersome bureaucratic barriers, rules, and hoops to jump through.

Unfortunately Uruguay tends to stifle progress rather than actively encourage it. I don't want to put you off the idea because I think Montevideo (and Uruguay in general) needs foreign ideas and approaches to break their very set ways of doing things, but if I am to be honest I have to say yes, red tape is certainly present.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 6509
