Saying Good Bye to Cable TV in Montevideo

By Lee at 06/14/07 09:07

, technology: Kworld TVBox 1440 in actionI decided to bite the bullet and cancel our cable tv service before the contract is up in September, even though they will probably make me pay pay for the service until the contract is up.

Why am I happy to pay for cable TV that I won't get/use? Because I am simply too fed up with the digital service. I was basically a happy customer with the analog cable service (except for the occassional, being several times or more per viewing sesession of momentary blackouts). With the digital service the blackouts are more obnoxious because it takes longer for the tv to resync.

But the essesence of my problem with the digital service started when it was first installed. At that time some channels were digital and the rest analog. It took a very long time for them to move all the channels to digital.

The only reason I watched any of the digital channels was that after all the channels were available on digital they dropped some from the analog system. Had they left all the channels on the analog system the digital box would have ended up at the bottom of all my junk in the closet.

My complaints with the digital service are probably more with the box than the service. If I try to delete the channels I don't watch or aren't available, it renumbers the rest of my channels. It seems to keep things like volume and subtitles independent per channel which is probably a good idea gone bad, it simple makes the device obnoxious to use.

I'm giving DirecTV a try as I have used their service in Latin America before with satisfaction. The monthly cost will be almost identical, but I believe the channel selection will be better on DirecTV and hopefully the receiver won't be an exercise in frustration for me.

Let me know how your direct-tv works out in Montevideo. We had it atop San Antonio and too many times, when I was really interested in something, it would pixelate or lose synch from cloudy weather. That was in the summer. Never had DirectTv in the winter.

I guess MonteCarlo is different from Nuevo Siglo. In the apto, it was all analog.. never had a problem. When we moved to the house, they had a promocion and gave us digital free for 3 months including a box. I tried it the first night we got the service but never used it since. Have noticed nothing different on the analog side of things....

The bottom line is I find it more reliable than when I had DirectTV.. if it pixelates, it's because of some end of the world type storm--couple of times a year.
