Antel vs Verzion

By Lee at 03/31/08 21:07

I was just thinking today about how lucky I feel not to have Verizon as my phone company anymore.

My last interaction with Verizon was to have them disconnect several phone lines. The people at customer service said they didn't know how to disconnect the lines and would call me back. Never got a call back. I finally resorted to called the Chairman's Office and got the lines disconnected that way!

I am reminded of that when I look at the log files so my website about hating the phone company. One of the more popular things people are search for is the "verizon disconnection office". Maybe it is a way of "increasing" business; not offering anyway to disconnect your service.

Now, back to Antel. When I signed up for DSL about 2 years ago, I was ordered the 1 megabit (download) 192k upload service. Compared to a friend in Pennsylvania who had 1.5 megadown (loadload) 128k upload service from Verizon.

Since then, my Antel DSL increased to 1.5/192K and now is 2.3 megabit download, 192k upload. I never did anything, Antel just increased the speed and the price has stayed the same. Uploads have always been faster than Verizon's service for my friend.

Although she had been using her Verizon DSL without problem since 2003, she was recently informed by Verizon that they would make a change. They were going to reduce the speed to 768K as they had just discovered that she lived too far away from the central office. The price would stay the same.

It seems that for almost 5 years she was close enough to the central office to receive 1.5 megabit download speeds and without doing anything was suddenly too far away!

Because I work depends on a good internet connection, I end up in a very bad mood when the service doesn't work... and we know with computer stuff sooner or later things won't work right.

That's why I have two connections. The other connection is from Dedicado and is 512K download and 512K upload (I use that for most of my work). I can switch between them in an instant, but most importantly, they both use a different network out of Uruguay so if a fiber is cut some place in the middle of nowhere, it is unlikely to cut both connections.

Where my friend lives in Pennsylvania, a home connection with 512K upload speeds is not an option at any price.

I also recall she got a celullar based internet service from Verzion and it was about 3 times the price of those services here and had an absolutely limit of 5 gigabytes of monthly after (if you exceed that usage your service is terminated for "abuse"). Here the non-unlimited services gives you 10 gigabytes a month and does the smart thing if you use more... charges you a little extra!

I really couldn't hope to compare the services I get in Montevideo with Verizon in Pennsylvania. It might cost a few bucks more, but I really have more, and better options and here I am!

No more $5 and $10 bills

By Wilbur Corncob at 03/21/08 14:17
By the end of March all the $5 and $10 bills in Uruguay will be out of circulation. Of course the $ is referring to peso and not dollars.

If someone gives you change in the next week or so I'd advise you not to accept the $5 or $10 peso notes. It will be hard to spend them and they are pretty disgusting as well... they practically fall apart in your hands.

The 5 and 10 pesos coins of course are durable and aren't likely to crumble into dust in your fingers.

Sunday, March 23, Expat Meet is ON!

By Wilbur Corncob at 03/17/08 07:57
friends club Speed Dating, Friends Club and Activities
The English speaking expat meetings which were started in Nov, 2005 had the objective of being at the same time and the same place every week. The idea was that people wouldn't need to go chase a time or place online but could just show up.

It's worked out exceeding well and the times Old Maz has been closed we've just put a sign on the door with an alternate close by location.

However, this coming Sunday, Old Maz restaurant will be open and the meeting will be as regularly scheduled.

The one change in the meeting that was made as it was changed from American Expats to English Speaking Expats... as some days, the "Americans" are in the minority.

We've also been meeting upstairs so if you don't see a large people of people overflowing the patio....

Into the Darkness

By Wilbur Corncob at 03/17/08 07:51
Last night, Montevideo, or at least Pocitos plunged into darkness with an unexpected (unexpected to me anyway) power outage.

Rather than sit at home in the dark, I took a walk down to the Rambla and enjoyed the unusual quiet. One restaurant had candles for all their clients, at another people were sitting the dark.

It lasted about an hour with one brief interruption of the darkness.

I can recall only one other similar power outage and that time I went to bed and all was well when I woke up.

Even momentary outages are rare. The usual cause of my UPS beeping for lack of power is when our maid bumps the cords when cleaning... not because of a power outage.

New Stop Light, Intersections of Av Brasil and Benito Blanco

By Lee at 03/09/08 08:03
I noticed yesterday that they were well on the way to having a new stop light installed at the intersection of Av Brasil and Benito Blanco.

That should be of tremendous benefit for the drivers who are tired of playing dodge ball at that intersection. Although there is (was) a stop sign, I think it was for show, not because anyone was really supposed to stop.

So I predict that soon it will be pleasant to drive through that intersection... but what about us poor pedestrians?

Depending on which of the 4 possible ways you wanted to cross it ranged from extremely easy to you better just shut your eyes and hope for the best.

Now it looks like they've put up pedestrian barriers and nice little icons to keep people from crossing two of the ways. I don't think that will stop anyone.

So if you're walking, just keep on jaywalking and hope for the best.
