The biggest problem I've had in Uruguay is the apparent local theory that for something to be "clean" it must smell "clean". Of course "clean" doesn't have a smell, so the reality things must smell like perfume.Of course the stronger the perfume the more clean something is. Unlike other countries, it seems impossible to find any unscented laundry detergent in the supermarkets. Or any other kind of unscented cleaners.
Amway has a store here and they sell a laundry detergent that has less perfume than the grocery store brands, though is still too much.
There may be hope, in Bitter Sweet in Uruguay La Gaucha Guapa reports about Ecotiendas that seels organic produce and she says "For those looking for non-toxic cleaning products they also sell alternatives to bleach and other strong cleaning agents."
Now, I hope that also means no obnoxious scents. Today is a holiday, so first thing Wednesday I'll check them out and hopefully return with some decent cleaning products before the maid arrives in the afternoon.
