Shopping in Punta del Este

01/13/10 12:52

Punta del Este is widely known as the most exclusive (and therefore expensive) areas of Uruguay, as such shopping there is an indulgence, not a bargain spree. However there are some gems to be found if you know where to look....

First port of call on your shopping spree should obviously be the mall on Roosevelt Avenue. Here you'll find over 100 stores as well as some restaurants, a large (and classy!) supermarket and a movie theater for when you need to rest in the evening! They even have a website so you can get an idea what to expect - www.puntashopping.com.uy

If you feel like really spoling yourself then head to Gorlero Avenue where you'll find fancy boutiques, many of which offer well known international fashion names such as Valentino, Tommy Hilfiger, Versace and more, but what else would you expect in a resort that Shakira and many Latino stars flock to every summer!

Along the main street you can also find adorable craft shops selling Uruguay's finest leather goods, paintings, artisan wares and more. If these prices aren't to your liking you can try out the craft market on Plaza Artigas in the evenings. Here you'll find lovely handmade clothing as well as souvenirs, hand blown glass, jewelry and of course more leather crafts.

Punta del Este and its neighboring La Barra are places to stroll, you'll be amazed at the things you find hidden around the next corner, so enjoy the surprises and discoveries.
