Lunch For English Speaking Expats... Bringing New Friends Together Weekly for Over 4 Years Fellini Ristobaretto, Montevideo: Sunday, August 1, 2010 UPDATE!! Updated meeting time: NOON
Colonia is one of the most prosperous departments of Uruguay, endowed with friendly people, beautiful river beaches and a rich history, that all contribute to making it a very special place to live or visit. Many tourists visit this part of Uruguay every year, many coming from Argentina by the well traveled river crossing.
COLONIA DEL SACRAMENTO: This is the capital of the rural Colonia regiona and was decalred as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995, marking as an important part of the heritage of humanity. The history of Colonia del Sacramento is surely one of the most fascinating of the Rio de la Plata and this is easily seen in its impressive architecture and intrigued cobble stone streets. It is a beautiful spot to gain a glimpse in to Uruguay'South America's colonial past.
The magical and unique "Street of Sighs"(Calle de los Suspiros) is a place where you can escape the reality that surrounds it and make an imaginary journey in time. The "Puerta de la Ciudadela" is located opposite to the Plaza 1811 and was inaugurated back in 1745, by the Portuguese Government of Vasconcellos.Understandably for its beauty and history it is the most visited place in Colonia, and one of the most popular spots in all of Uruguay.
The construction of the Plaza de Toros (the famous bullfighting ring) finished on January 9, 1910. For its inauguration, the company that owns it hired two of the best bullfighters to come from Spain, Ricardo Torres and his younger brother Manuel Torres. However shortly after in 1912 bullfights were banned in Uruguayan by government decree.
In addition to the historical intrigue, the city has many charms, and is picturesque place to enjoy a relaxing break in one of the many luxury hotels and posadas. Sample fine Uruguayan food and wine in the local restaurants or gaze out at the sunset across the harbor filled with fantastic yachts.
COLONIA SUIZA (Swiss Colonia)
This community was founded by European immigrants, especially from Switzerland, but also from Austria, France and Germany, who came to seek a better fate, fleeing the economic crisis in Europe. In late 1861 immigrants began to arrive by the Rio Rosario (Rosario River) and so this year is taken as the foundation date of the town.
Some other cities of tourist interest in the department of Colonia are Juan Lacaze, Colonia Valdense and Carmelo among other.
