Food in Uruguay...

By Wilbur Corncob at 06/03/07 05:59

When I first arrived in Uruguay I thought my Spanish was sufficent to eat out and order what I wanted. Instead I found the restaurant menus in Uruguay to be completely confusing. So I had many surprises for lunch; almost always good.

After a couple years you'd think I had it all figured out and I did too until last night.

The menu listed "Enchilladas de Camerones", created the somewhat odd image of some mexican style food made of enchilladas stuffed with shrimp (rather than the usual beef, chicken or cheese).

I figured it was worth a shot. Well, when the plate arrived I was a little bit surprised. It was much more like a chinese shrimp stir fry surrounded with little balls of deep fried potatoes.

It was made with a soy sauce and sprinkled with sesame seeds. The look, flavor, and stuff it was made with completely crushed my vision of some mexican style food.

It was ok, and maybe if I hadn't been thinking mexican it would have tasted better.

The moral of this story is always ask if your not sure (sure as in having ordered it before) what something is!
